Matt Dalziel

Name:   Matt Dalziel
DOB: 1970
National team: Senior
Hometown: Hobart
Current place of residence: Hobart
Club: Derwent Canoe Club
Nickname: None now. Once upon a time the slalom paddlers called me ‘speed racer’

How did you get into paddling: As a 9 y.o I loved to play in the Swan River in WA.
There’s a club there, so I asked a nice lady if I could take a boat for a spin and that was that.
What has been your biggest accomplishment in the sport so far: Probably a 14 th  place in World Champs in 1998, but winning Master Worlds in 2010 was pretty close.
What keeps you busy outside of paddling? Working as a teacher and coaching Tas
juniors.
Who has been the greatest influence on your career? Andrea McQuitty has been a great mentor and coach.
How would your best friend describe you? Not very quick at the start!
Do you have any superstitions before a race? Always, always, scrub my hands with dirt or mud, preferably from the river.
What is your favourite course to paddle on? Favourite local course is Mersey- nice and continuous and rewards good boat handling and fitness. Favourite ever foreign course would be Garmisch Partenkirchen- so hard to paddle well!
Previous National Teams:  Senior Team; 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2009, 2010 and 2012
