Paddle Australia reconstitutes Canoe Wildwater Technical Committee

Paddle Australia (PA) is pleased to announce the formation of a new Canoe Wildwater Technical Committee. Mathew French, Karen Janiszewski, Darryl Long, Nic Wilson and Alex McIntyre were confirmed as the initial members of the new Committee at a meeting on 9th May. Courtney McMillan, PA Sports Services and Events Coordinator, will provide support to the Committee. Further members may be added at the recommendation of the Committee.

“We are delighted to be able to reconstitute the Canoe Wildwater Technical Committee at this stage,”, said Phil Jones, PA CEO. “We are confident that the new Committee will add considerable value to the management of the Wildwater Discipline. There were some excellent candidates that offered their services and we are very grateful to everyone that applied.”

“I would like to acknowledge the contribution made by our informal Advisory Group over the last 18 months. I am sure that Russell Bassett, Roy Farrance, Peter McIntyre and Tony Misson will continue to provide their expertise in various ways in the future.”
The PA Discipline Technical Committees provide vital input into the planning and management of their particular discipline; promoting and encouraging participation, whether as athletes, coaches or officials; planning and delivering competitions, including the National Championships; overseeing the selection of athletes and team officials; managing Australian representative teams attending international events.

Despite the absence of a Canoe Wildwater Technical Committee, the discipline has been growing in popularity recently, with increased numbers at the National Championship, considerable interest in the Sydney International Whitewater Festival in February which that incorporated Wildwater for the first time, and strong attendance at training camps.
“This is a new Committee. Once they have had to time to formulate their plans, PA will circulate information to the community through the PA website.”

The Canoe Wildwater Technical Committee meeting held on the 9th May 2019 had resulted in key outcomes for the discipline.
• Alex McIntyre has been appointed as the athlete representative on the Canoe Wildwater Technical Committee.
• Matt Dazliel (coach), Lyne Strmecki (co Manager) and Cindy Davis (co Manager) were ratified and appointed for the 2019 Paddle Australia Canoe Wildwater Junior and U23 team.
• A strategic planning workshop for the Canoe Wildwater Technical Committee has been organized to be held on 6th July 2019 to look at the future direction of the discipline.
