WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2022
Congratulations to Dave Burdett and Harry Langley, who both represented Australia at the World Championships and World Cup in Celje.
Both athletes had a great experience, met lots of international athletes and learnt so much.
NATIONALS 2022
The team in WA are working exceptionally hard at organising a great national from 6 – 8 August.
It is many years since there has been a national’s in WA, so paddlers from across Australia are excited by the opportunity.
The event schedule with itemised event times will be emailed to all competitors next week once registrations close (midnight Sunday 31 July), with the course selection proceeding as planned.

| Sunday, 8 August | Sprint Course – Bells Rapids (Ford above bridge to Sideswipe) 9am Bells Rapids, Cathedral Avenue, Brigadoon First event is the best of 2 individual sprints Team sprint race will be in the afternoon |
| Sunday, 8 August | Medal presentations & sundowner Ascot Kayak Club from 530pm Medals and certificates will be presented while competitors enjoy a gourmet burger and a cuppa to be purchased from the Swan Café. Other drinks will be provided as the event concludes on the foreshore of the Swan River and a stone’s throw away from Perth Airport. |
Please note that there is no official practice session on the Classic course due to no access at the take out. While the river is open to paddle, competitors would have to complete a full valley run (40km) in order to paddle this section. WildWater WA worked extremely hard to gain access to this section for the competition and would not like to see any competitor’s safety jeopardised by trying to cross the railway for an earlier take out. We cannot have paddlers attempting to jump the railway track. Should you wish to paddle the Classic section- paddlers must either paddle upstream, walk back along the rivers edge or paddle through the valley (40km).

NATIONALS 2023 – 2025
The Wildwater Technical Committee with Paddle Australia has worked hard to try to schedule nationals around water availability and other paddle disciplines. The current schedule is:
- 2023 – TBA late in late August
- 2024 –potentially – January Mitta Mitta Victoria
- 2025 – Aug – Western Australia (noting that a selection event will need to be held earlier in the year for teams)
- 2026 – multi discipline nationals TBA
2023 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
PA and the WWTC await advise from the ICF on the location of the world championships for 2023. In 2023 there will be:
- Seniors
- Juniors and u23
The WWTC would love to send as many athletes as possible – we hope that you are training hard!!
At this stage it is planned to have a full tour (including training at various locations across Europe) in the lead up to the Juniors and u23.
As soon as dates are known for both seniors and juniors/u23 WWTC, through PA, will call for nominations for coaches and team managers. This will allow for planning and coordination to allow all the athletes to maximise the benefit of a tour.
OVERSEAS OPPORTUNITY
The ICF WWTC is seeking to have multinational training camps throughout the year to allow athletes to learn from each other and grow in the sport. It will be for juniors, u23 and seniors and include a concluding race format. The purpose of the camps is grow the discipline participants.
The ICF WWTC is seeking EOI from athletes who would be interested in participating in a training camp in November (possibly around Ardeche).

ELITE ATHLETE
This newsletter we profile Alex McIntyre. Alex and his brother Rob are well known to many in the wildwater community.
What do you love about paddling?
I love to paddle and my passion is creeking.
In what events have you competed internationally?
I have competed in international marathons, surf, river, sprint, ocean and of course wildwater.
When did you start in wildwater
My first juniors was in 2009 in Switzerland – I have kept going and love competing in wildwater.
What are some of the highlights
In my international career I have made 8 rapid sprint finals getting on the podium in 2016. A fantastic result for Australia.
How do you contribute
I am helping my Avoca Kayak Club juniors, running coaching camps and coaching the Australian junior team ( 2017).
I am a member of River Racing Aust, a group whose focus is on developing & supporting the sport.
Are you going to Nationals in August
This year I will be racing the Wildwater Nationals and then go on to the 124km 2 day Avon Descent, one of the world’s top 10 classic events
