CEO Blog – October 2021

As COVID restrictions ease, it is great to see our paddling community able to safely enjoy our waterways together again. With the easing though comes the question of whether vaccinations should be required to participate in different activities. It is a challenging issue for everyone.

The landscape varies around the country, with different legislation in different states and territories. Clearly some decisions will be taken out of our hands. For example, where venues are run or owned by local councils, their policies are likely to apply to all users, including clubs leasing facilities on council land. Athletes and spectators attending events at venues such as the Sydney International Regatta Centre, run by the NSW Office of Sport, will need to comply with the venue requirements. Those qualifying to travel to international events are unlikely to be able to fly unless fully vaccinated.

Equally, some clubs and event organisers will be able to make various determinations themselves. Everyone needs to make themselves aware of local requirements. Those in doubt should seek advice from their State Paddle Association.

It is against this background that Paddle Australia is considering whether a national policy can be developed, and if so, what it should cover. In the meantime, we have been able to put in place a facility that allows members to confirm evidence of their vaccination status when a club or event organiser requires it. We hope this will help in ensuring that the local requirements are complied with. More details are provided below.

On behalf of Paddle Australia and the Board, I’d like to congratulate NSW Junior paddler Natalia Drobot on being awarded a Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship for 2022. Natalia continues to impress us in her Canoe Sprint endeavours, and the SAHOF Scholarship is a testament to the hard work she continues to put in.

We welcome Brett Johnstone to the new role of Executive Officer at Paddle Tasmania. Brett has already started and will work with Sandra Kent, State Development Officer, on raising the profile of paddling across Tasmania. Brett’s timing is perfect, joining just in time to attend the celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of Paddle Tasmania and their AGM in October.

Following a very successful Olympic and Paralympic Games, along with the announcement of Brisbane being the host city of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Paddle Australia is rolling out a new, ambitious, and exciting performance and pathway strategy. As we strive for our goal of consistent medal winning international performances with athletes who inspire the nation and promote excellence, PA are recruiting for a number of key leadership, coaching and performance support positions that will join our team in the coming months.

Throughout November we will celebrate our whole community through the 2021 Paddle Australia Annual Awards which will once again be delivered virtually. Across the month you will have the opportunity to meet our winners as we recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions of the many people who make our paddling community great.

With the Annual General Meeting upon us, I have had the opportunity to reflect on the last 12 months, and I would personally like to thank our paddlers, coaches, officials, volunteers, administrators, parents and support networks for their ongoing support and commitment. For some, it has been a year impacted by lockdowns and one that has disrupted not only our daily lives but how we are able to participate and enjoy our sport. Through these tough times our sport has again shown great resilience!

As we look towards the next 12 months, I look forward to our paddling community being able to reunite again. The start of summer is fast approaching, and I know that our members are looking forward to spending more time afloat!

Yours in paddling,

Phil Jones
