Australians Make Low Key Start Ahead Of Big Week At Slalom World Championship

The Australian Canoe Slalom team made a low-key start to the 2018 World Championships in Rio on Tuesday ahead of a big week of racing.

The competition began with the men’s and women’s K1 and C1 team events, with a sixth placing for the women’s C1 team of Jessica Fox (NSW) and Noemie Fox (NSW) and Ros Lawrence (NSW) the best result for the Australians.

Earlier Jessica Fox and Lawrence teamed up with Kate Eckhardt (TAS) for a seventh in the women’s K1 team event, while the men’s C1 combination of Daniel Watkins (TAS), Brodie Crawford (WA) and Ian Borrows (NSW) finished 13th.

Watkins then joined 2016 Olympian Lucien Delfour (NSW) and Tim Anderson (NSW) to finish 10th in the men’s K1 team event.

“It as not the best teams’ race, but good to clear the cobwebs at least,” Watkins said. “Teams events are a lot of fun, even if they don’t go that well.”

Delfour said it’s a good opportunity to bring the team closer together.

“It’s a special one, even though we don’t really train together for it,” he said.

“So every time you do race, you’re never quite sure what is going to happen and you sort of hope for the best.

“I thought it was fine. We had a good plan, but we just ran into some issues at the start. But it’s fun.”

The day was a big moment for Anderson, competing at his first senior world championships.

“It was good to get on my first teams event at a senior world championships, so it was a lot of fun,” he said.

“We train together all the time, so we know each other’s styles pretty well. It’s fun to combine it into a team event.”

The 2018 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships continues on Wednesday night, with the heats of the men’s C1 and the women’s K1.

Jessica Fox is the reigning K1 women’s world champion, and will be aiming for her third world title in the discipline this weekend.
