Wildwater – The Year ahead

The Wildwater Committee has a number of things planned in the year ahead for our developing paddlers commencing with a small training camp on the Goulburn River at Blue Gums revolving around the e2a race weekend to be held on the 18th to 20th March.   The plan is to hold a rapid sprint race on the Blue Gums rapid on the Friday evening before it gets dark, to paddle in the Down river race on the Saturday and then to have some training at Blue Gums led by Robert McIntyre on the Sunday morning before everyone heads home around lunch time.  This weekend will be open to all Wildwater paddlers seeking to improve their river paddling skills.  It was also double as a great fund raiser for the Wildwater committee as some of the net proceeds from the Saturday river race go to the Wildwater Committee.

Based on the success of our Snowy Mountains Wildwater Development camp at the end of September last year we intend to hold it again this year.  At this stage we would again like to start at the Goobagandra River on Saturday the 25th September, 2016.  This year we intend to hold a river race on the Tumut river on Sunday the 26th September.  The Tumut river race used to be a big annual race so the Wildwater Committee would like to get this reinstated on the annual calendar.  The rest of the week will again see the group moving throughout the Snowy Mountains/Canberra region seeking out suitable water to train on and then we will end up at Jindabyne for some excellent paddling on the Snowy River near Island Bend.  This is a week of paddling not to be missed so mark it in your calendar.

Thinking ahead to our next year national Championships we need to consider that this will double as selection events for our Junior and Under 23 athletes seeking national selection to travel overseas to compete in the World Wildwater championships to be held on the Mur River in Austria.

Accordingly we will be working in closely with our slalom counterparts so that an effective slalom and wildwater championships can be co-ordinated.  It may well be that the National schools championships both Sprint and Classic can double as selection events and may well be held on the Goulburn river at Eildon.  We are also considering holding the National Wildwater Championships on the Mitta Mitta river and these will double as the other selection events.

We will elaborate in the future with more details about these events.

We are also building a data base of interested paddlers in river racing and wildwater racing so please pass on the word and if anyone is interested they can send me an email with their contact details at peterm@mpcc.com.au
